About Slovakia Citizenship and Residency

Slovaquie does not offer a residency or citizenship by investment program. However, its Immigration Law provides for Slovakia Investment Visa, this type of investor is required to invest an important amount of money in a Slovak enterprise, however, they must also meet other requirements.

Investment options available to acquire the citizenship and passport of Slovakia. 

Foreigner must meet the following investment conditions to become a major investor:

  • a minimum of 100 million euros which must be invested in the development of a company;
  • the investment must also target the creation of at least 300 jobs;
  • the investment must have a significant impact on Slovakia’s economy.

This type of investment can benefit from the regional aid offered by the country’s government. At the moment, this is one of the most advanced support schemes provided by an European country’s government. Once the documents that prove the creation of the company and the investment, the investor will receive the Certificate of a major Investment issued by the Ministry of the Interior.

Foreign citizen that is interested in moving to Slovakia to obtain a Slovakia Investment Visa must meet certain requirements apart from the condition of the minimum amount to be invested.

  • they must submit their clean criminal records
  • the records must be filled by investors coming from their home countries
  • it must also be filed by citizens who have lived in other countries than their state of origin.

Foreign citizens, such as non-EU citizens who have relocated to Europe, are required to file a criminal record issued from the country they lived in for more than 3 months in the past 3 years. It should be noted that this program is not limited to non-EU citizens only, as investors from EU countries are also entitled to relocate here and obtain significant foreign investor certificates.

Slovak citizenship may be granted to an applicant who has had continuous permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic for at least eight years immediately preceding the submission of the application for Slovak citizenship.

Slovakia Citizenship by Birth

Children can acquire Slovak citizenship by birth if:

  • One of the parents is a Slovak citizen.
  • The child is born in the territory of the Slovak Republic, and the parents are stateless.
  • The child is born in the territory of the Slovak Republic, and the parents are foreign nationals.
  • The child has not acquired the citizenship of any foreign national parents by birth.

If a child acquires Slovak citizenship by birth based on the fact that one of his parents is a citizen of Slovakia and the other parent is a foreigner, the child retains the Slovak citizenship even if it is proven that the parent (Slovak citizen) is not the parent of the child.

Slovakia Citizenship by Descent

To acquire Slovak citizenship by descent, applicants need to fulfill the following conditions:

  • At least one of the ancestors (parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent) needs to be a citizen of Slovakia.
  • Parents must have been born before 1990.
  • Parents must have Slovak citizenship at the time of the applicant’s birth.

Additionally, with recent reforms to the citizenship law, those who do not qualify for the citizenship by descent program due to generational limitations can apply for Slovak Living Abroad (SLA) certificate. This certificate allows its holder to live in Slovakia and eventually apply for citizenship if they can prove they have contributed to the country or have lived continuously for at least three years in Slovakia before receiving their SLA.

Slovakia Citizenship by Naturalization

To be eligible for Slovak citizenship by naturalization, the applicants need to meet the following conditions:

  • The applicant must have uninterrupted permanent residence in Slovakia for at least eight years.
  • The applicant must undergo a probity check according to the Act on Citizenship of the Slovak Republic.
  • The applicant must prove language proficiency in the Slovak language.
  • The applicant must prove they have sufficient knowledge about the Slovak Republic.

Slovakia Residency Requirements And Qualifications

Basic required documents:

  • Proof of clear criminal record
  • Certificate of release from state bond of the former Czechoslovak Republic, a naturalization certificate, or a confirmation of gaining foreign citizenship if the applicant is a former citizen.
  • Certificate of a Slovak National Living Abroad. (if applicable)
  • The Applicant´s Questionnaire. Applicants who are at least 14 years old should complete the questionnaire for Slovak citizenship.

Étape 1: Determine your purpose for traveling to Slovakia, which will determine the type of visa you should apply for.

Étape 2: Determine how many entries to Slovakia/the Schengen area you need.

  • Depending on the location of the consulate/visa center you are applying through, you may have to schedule an appointment to submit your visa. In other cases, you may simply be able to drop your application off during normal operating hours. Contact your Slovakian Consulate/visa center directly to find out if you need to schedule an appointment to submit your visa.

Étape 5 : Fill out your application

  • Different Slovakian Consulates/visa processing centers provide different ways of accessing applications depending on where you are applying from, you may have to apply online through the Slovakian Electronic Visa Request.
  • Alternatively, you may have to download, complete, and print out an online form. You will submit this paper copy to whichever Slovakian Consulate you are applying through.

Étape 6 : Pay the Application Fee.

Étape 7 : Submit your Slovakian Visa Application (at least 15 days before traveling, not before 6 months).

  • Different Slovakian consulate/visa application centers have different procedures for submitting applications. Applications must be submitted in person to the consulate/center you are applying through (in rare circumstances, the consulate will waive the in-person requirement). Applications for children must be submitted in person by the child’s parent/guardian.
  • When you submit your application, you will likely also be asked to submit biometric data (fingerprints). Children younger than 12 years are likely exempt from having their fingerprints collected. However, facial photo capture is required for all applicants nevertheless of their age.
  • Please note, after submitting your application, you may be asked to return at a later date for a personal interview to provide further information/materials related to your trip.
