About Argentina Citizenship and Residency

Obtaining residency by investment in Argentina is one of the most popular immigration options among businessmen who are looking for a country in Latin America with the right infrastructure and conditions to do business without worrying about distractions and inconveniences beyond their control. Generally, a residence visa for investment in Argentina has a validity of about three years, but it can be renewed for another three years.

Under act no 25.871, Dto. 616/2010, Dto. 70/2017 a foreign national who has an annual income of at least ARS30,000, may be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa. The visa has a validity of 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years. After that, the resident may apply for permanent residency. After two years of permanent residency, the resident will be eligible for citizenship.

Residency in Argentina

Becoming a permanent resident in Argentina is largely a matter of lawfully meeting the requirements of temporary residence for at least three years and then filling out the necessary paperwork. Once you’re a permanent resident, you can work and live in the country indefinitely.

Argentina Citizenship

There are three main gateways to citizenship in Argentina: (a) being born there, (b) becoming naturalized, or (c) if one or both of your parents are Argentinian citizens.

You can apply for naturalized Argentinian citizenship if you’ve been living in the country for at least two years. You’ll need to prove employment and uninterrupted residence as well as provide other essential documentation, including your passport and DNI (residency card).

Çift vatandaşlık is permitted in Argentina. You don’t have to renounce your previous citizenship to become an Argentinian citizen. However, while you’re within Argentinian borders, you’re recognized only as an Argentinian citizen, even if you are a dual national.

MERCOSUR citizens
Nationals of the MERCOSUR area can live and work in Argentina. As such, they are eligible for a two-year renewable residency permit. After two years, they can apply for permanent residency.

Long-term visas (Residency Visas)

If you are planning on staying for longer than 90-days, then you’ll need a long-stay visa or residency permit. Happily, many options cover a wide range of people and circumstances.

 

Investor Visa (Inversionista) – Under act no 25.871, Dto. 616/2010, Dto. 70/2017, an investor visa may be granted to a foreign national who intends to make an investment in Argentina for an amount not less than ARS1,500,000 (Argentine pesos) in any lawful business engaging in a productive, commercial, or service activity.

The visa is renewable for up to 3 years. After that, the resident may apply for permanent residency. After two years of permanent residency, the resident will be eligible for citizenship.

Requirements/eligibility:

  1.  Clean criminal record. Police clearance certificate from the countries where you have resided for a period of more than one year during the last three years, together with an affidavit stating a lack of criminal records.
  2. Proof of financial situation.
  3.  Proof of source of funds.
  4. Investment and Business plan.
  5.  CV and evidence of business background.
  6. All documents must be duly translated into Spanish.

 

Pensioner Visa (Pensionado) – Under the act no 25.871, Dto. 616/2010, Dto. 70/2017 a foreign national who has a pension of at least ARS30,000, may be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa. The visa has a validity of 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years. After that, the resident may apply for permanent residency. After two years of permanent residency, the resident will be eligible for citizenship.

You will be required to prove that you receive a pension or retirement benefit from a government or an international organization of at least ARS30,000. You may include your dependents, but additional amounts may be required.

Pensionado Visa holders may establish a business or work on their own, but may not work as employees.

The visa has a validity of one year. You can renew the visa on the condition that you still meet the requirements. After two renewals, you will be eligible for permanent residency.

Requirements/eligibility:

  1. Must have a clean criminal record. Police clearance certificate from the countries where you have resided for a period of more than one year during the last three years, together with an affidavit stating lack of criminal records.
  2. Entry visa stamp (if proceeding)
  3.  Certificate issued by a government or international organization that certifies that you receive a pension or retirement, in a regular and permanent manner, as well as the amount and duration of said benefit. — -Proof of source of funds/income.
  4. 3 Payment receipts of the government pension.
  5. All documents must be duly translated into Spanish.

 

Person Of Independent Means Visa (Rentista) – Under the act no 25.871, Dto. 616/2010, Dto. 70/2017 a foreign national who has an annual income of at least ARS30,000, may be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa. The visa has a validity of 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years. After that, the resident may apply for permanent residency. After two years of permanent residency, the resident will be eligible for citizenship.

Rentista Visa holders may establish a business or work on their own, but may not work as employees.

Requirements/eligibility:

  1. prove an annual income of at least ARS30,000 from a guaranteed source. It includes the applicant, his / her spouse, and children under 25 years of age.
  2. show proof of your income from investments in foreign banks or companies, or securities issued by banks in the Argentine banking system and purchased with resources from abroad. Additional income might be required to include dependents.
  3. making a bank deposit of at least ARS30,000 at a local bank.
  4. You don’t have a criminal record.
