About Austria Citizenship and Residency

Austria offers citizenship and residency by investment. In citizenship by investment, the applicant is required to invest actively in the Austrian economy in the form of a joint venture or direct investment in a business that creates jobs or generates new export sales. Passive investments in government bonds or real estate are not qualified. Austrian citizens can live and work in the country as well as anywhere in the EU at any time. The investment amounts usually range from EUR 2-10 million and there are several rules for investors.

  • The main applicant must have a notable influence over an entity
  • The entity should have a strong economic performance indicator
  • A significant number of full-time jobs are to be created from the investment
  • Substantial investment must be made (usually in millions)
  • The entity has to have an international reputation
  • The achievements of the investor must support Austria’s external relations in the economic sector.

Investment Options for Austrian Citizenship by Investment

  • Make a significant contribution to a government fund
  • Joint venture investment
  • Invest in venture capital
  • Invest into an innovative business or business in an industry considered ”priority” by the Austrian government

Austrian residency by investment allows the applicant to travel to all of Europe’s Schengen Area states without a visa. The residence permit is initially issued for one year and then can be renewed without problems or interruptions. For acquiring a residency permit under the Austria Private Residence Program, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have financial independent means, a minimum of EUR 40,000  in liquid funds on a bank account, the amount of which will increase depending on the size of their family.
  • Provide proof of permanent residential real estate (either purchased or leased), where they and their dependents will live.
  • have full-cover health insurance.
  • Have documented German language skills.

Applicants also need to personally submit the mandatory documentation to the Austrian consular or diplomatic representation in their current country of residence. And obtain a special visa at the Austrian embassy, once their residence application has been approved. They can travel to Austria to collect their residence permit from the relevant authority.
