About Laos Citizenship and Residency

The government of Laos offers honorary citizenship to foreign nationals. Prominent businessmen are eligible to apply if they have donated at least USD 500,000 towards the country’s socio-economic development and brought in USD 1 million in foreign investment to Laos before applying.

Decree No.14 issued in September, honorary citizens will be given full rights to entry/exit, live permanently and work and will be able to purchase land without any restrictions, according to Radio Free Asia. They can also buy public land and can also lease in public and private sectors. This program is open to all foreign nationals without any restrictions. Applicants must be over 18 years old and should have a clean criminal and health record to apply. The Ministry of Justice will review the applications and will forward them for approval within 30 days.

Total investment of $1.5 million US dollars in the country:

A.  Donated at least USD 500,000 towards the country’s socio-economic development

B. Brought in USD 1 million in foreign investment to Laos before applying.

Laos does not offer any form of long-term visa for non-citizens. Eligible applicants for permanent residency status include the following:

  • Foreigners who have lived in Laos for 10 continuous years including at least 10 months a year,
  • Foreign individuals classed as specialists or scientists;
  • Those who have run a stable business in Laos with a minimum investment of US$500,000 for at least five years; or
  • Foreigners who have actively contributed to the development of the nation.

Laos Citizenship/Residency Requirements And Qualifications

Individuals requesting the Lao nationality must meet all the following conditions:

1.   Have eighteen years of age or more when requesting the Lao nationality;

2.   Able to speak, read and write in Lao;

3.   Possess evidence of their social and cultural integration, knowledge and respect of Lao traditions;

5.   Not under prosecution by the court to custody;

6.   Agree to relinquish the original nationality;

7.   Have a permanent residence in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic continuously for ten years before requesting Lao nationality.

8. Dual citizenship: not accepted applicant must renounce their original citizenship.

In order to get a residence permit you need to meet the necessary requirements set by the migration department:

  1. Register a company, start doing business;
  2. Register a branch office and transfer foreign workers to work in it;
  3. Register a company and employ yourself as a highly-skilled specialist;
  4. Buy an already-running business and apply for a residency instantly.
  5. As well one person can apply under the same basis being a shareholder and director in one person.

Applying for a Laos Residency Permit is a straightforward process. Here are the following steps you need to take:

Step 1: Contact Laos Embassy

Go to the nearest Laos embassy in your home country and get the list of all the Laos residence visa requirements.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

The next step is to prepare all the documents you’ll need for your application. Try to make photocopies of the original documents if you’ll need them while submitting them at the consulate.

Step 3: Book an Interview with the Embassy

Please note that you should be punctual and take along any necessary documents. The officer will ask basic questions about your personal information and why you want to reside in the country.

Step 4: Pay your Visa Fee

Applicants must pay the fee at the consulate either by cash or card.

Step 5: Wait for your Visa Approval

The processing time for the Laos Residency permit is three months. So be patient while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers your application.
