About Jamaica Citizenship and Residency

Jamaica offers Permanent Residency which allows a foreign national to live and work in Jamaica without restrictions on their stay, without submitting an application for a work permit or Jamaican citizenship. They are not afforded the same constitutional rights as a Jamaican citizen.

As a part of the approval process, Permanent Residence applicants will be interviewed by the Agency’s Investigation and Surveillance Unit.

Applications are processed within 3 to 6 months and all documents submitted must be the original.

Categories for Permanent Residence:

  • Employment – for foreign nationals working on the island for more than 3 years
  • Retirement – for retired foreign nationals who wishes to retire in Jamaica
  • Marriage to a Jamaican – for foreign nationals who are married to a Jamaican national
  • Dependent – for foreign nationals who are dependent on a Permanent Resident holder
  • Previous holders of Unconditional Landing status by virtue of marriage to a Jamaican

Residency through Work Permit

Foreign and Commonwealth nationals who wish to engage in employment activities in the island, whatever the nature of the employment, are required to obtain a work permit or work permit exemption before entering the country.

Residency through Registration

Non-Jamaicans may be granted Jamaican Resident Status on application by virtue of marriage to Jamaican nationals. Hence, foreign spouses are required to register with the Ministry of National Security upon arrival in Jamaica, after which they will be allowed to reside permanently on the island.

The couple is required to submit the following:

  • Official certificate of marriage – in cases of previous marriage(s), the official Decree(s) of Absolute will be required
  • Proof of Jamaican citizenship enjoyed by a spouse, however, acquired
  • Passport of both spouses
  • Passport-sized photographs of both; and
  • A signed declaration that both spouses share the same matrimonial home

A person may be granted naturalization after a minimum period of five (5) years of residency in Jamaica on application following his/her residency through either visa or work permit application.A Jamaican passport or travel document may be issued on application to a non-Jamaican only after the person has obtained a Certificate of Registration or Naturalization from the appropriate authorities in Jamaica.

Jamaica Residency Requirements And Qualifications

To apply for Permanent Residence you must submit:

  • Valid passport no less than 6 months before the expiration date
  • Evidence of financial status and means of support such as particulars of pension, bank statement and so on.
  • Business owners must present a certificate of registration, tax compliance certificate (TCC), proof of income tax returns and audited financial statements for the last full year of the business operations.
  • The original birth certificate of the applicant should be translated if not into English
  • Original birth certificate or machine-readable Jamaican passport of Jamaican spouse
  • Original marriage certificate/decree absolute if applicable
  • Original birth certificate for children if applicable
  • Local medical certificate/certificate of good health in Jamaica
  • Police certificate from the previous country of residence and from Jamaica if you have been residing on the island for 6 months or more
  • Two (2) identical passport-size pictures, certified by a Justice of the Peace (JP)
  • Evidence of property ownership/assets in Jamaica or overseas should be translated if not into English
  • A letter stating the reason for permanent residence and must be addressed to the CEO, PICA, 25 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10.
  • Letter from two (2) reputable references, must be Jamaican nationals and must be addressed to the CEO, PICA, 25 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10.
  • Entry visa (if applicable)
  • Required fee

N.B – All documents submitted must be original.

Applications are usually processed within 3 to 6 months.

Residence Permit Application Steps:

Step 1. Apply for a visa at the nearest embassy/consulate of Jamaica in your home country.

Step 2. After entering Jamaica, book an appointment at the Agency’s Investigation and Surveillance Unit to apply for a residence permit.

Steps 3. Gather and submit all the requested documents. All the documents you submit must be original. Make sure you attend your appointment on time because you may be asked to be interviewed by the Agency’s Investigation and Surveillance Unit.

Step 4. Wait for a response. You shall receive a response to your residence permit application within three to six months for your residence permit result.
